There are The Force Awaken spoilers in this post.

Hope everyone had a lovely 25th of December regardless if that date was a cause for celebration or not. Tune in next week for the thrilling conclusion!

So... I liked The Force Awakened. I liked how they handled Han Solo, and I know there are those of you that will disagree with me on that point, but I think Han in the movie is more realistic then Han in the old EU. Leia and Han are both people that are unwilling to compromise and that is not something that good relationships are founded on. In the old EU Han changes a lot in order to fit into Leia's life and into the republic leadership. I think it's just as realistic, if not more so, that Han is unwilling to do that and when the times got tough he “went back to doing what he did best” being a scoundrel. Scoundrels are not known to be good husbands or leaders.

I think the love conquers all trope is really over played in popular media (hell it's over played in Star Wars) and it's refreshing to me to see something different. Love can change people for the better but that is not always the case and it's not always enough.

I was never really overly attached to the post Return of the Jedi extended universe stuff. I liked it well enough but I was more into the stuff that happened before a New Hope. I will acknowledge that this probably has a lot to do with influencing my opinions on the matter. I think ultimately though I will need to see the next two movies before I can really pass any sort of definitive judgment on the new movies.

I would actually be more than happy to fuse both the post ROTJ EU and EPVII. Since EPVII handles things in broad strokes, one can fit a lot in between. Just rename Anakin Solo as Ben and keep Chewie from dying, and we're go. Also, Ben Skywalker should be renamed Obi-Wan Skywalker, and Mara Jade should remain alive. Since Anakin Solo was left behind to die in the Yuuzhan Vong War, that would turn his mind as to why the Jedi and the Skywalker clan are traitors and weaklings in his eyes, and would give him plenty of justifications to instead emulate his powerful grandfather.

Some things were rendered non-canon by Episode 7 though. Like the existence of all 3 Solo children, and the Vong, which happens during the exact same point in time as Episode 7. Or Luke's marriage to Mara Jade.

The Vong turned me against the post ROTJ EU. Episode 7 wipes it clean, and Disney has said that Bioware is allowed to continue with their own story anyway, so I'm a happy man.

Given that most of the Jedi are in hiding, that would include any children of Han that didn't turn evil. Same thing possibly goes for Mra Jade.

The Vong weren't that bad, although them killing Chewie was dramatic, but for pure shock value.

I'd rather combine them both, but the story is vague enough for either way to be true for now. But then again, Jacen Solo was a better villain than his movie counterpart Ben.

It's not going to happen, though. J. J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, the guy who co-write Episodes 4-6, are going their own way. They're not bothering with the book canon, just like George Lucas would have done were he the one working on the movies. The Vong? Jacen Solo? The Dark Nest? Gone. Everything that made me hate Star Wars for so long is gone. And I am glad.

And I must stress that they are doing exactly what George Lucas did with stuff outside his personal canon; ignore everything unless it sounds or looks cool. Thus, Coruscant and the Mandalorian homeworld maintained their names, but everything else was tossed to the wind at his whim. And if he'd have made 7-9, he'd have done the exact same thing.

"... and Disney has said that Bioware is allowed to continue with their own story anyway, ..."
Does that mean KotOR I, II and SW:TOR are canon?

Yes and no... but mostly no. Technically the only things from the pre Disney buyout that are cannon are the six movies, the clone wars cgi movie and the clone wars CGI (not the 2d) animated sires.

The buyout lead to all the book, comic, video game and TV shows in development or in production to be canceled. The only thing to survive that purge was SWTOR. Disney has said that Bioware can pretty much do their own thing story wise with the game. Though I'm sure they have been given some guidelines and probably still have to run everything by the people in charge but that's no different then what they were doing before.

The more realistic thing to do is assume that SWTOR is not canon until Disney says it is. The more optimistic way is to assume SWTOR IS canon until Disney says otherwise. The latter is how I like to roll because I'm an optimistic person. Your millage may vary. Currently though, all the Old Republic stuff falls under "Legends" designation just like all the other old EU stuff.

I like the snowball fight.

As for TFA... I agree with you, Han was extremely well done. Harrison Ford is a great actor and he really nailed it.

I saw it opening day and honestly was not that happy with it. There are a lot of plot holes and some things that just do not make any sense.

However, I saw it yesterday with my 6 year old nephew and of course he loved it... but also I enjoyed it more. Somehow the 2nd time around I was able to ignore all the glaring logic holes more this time. Which is unusual... usually the 1st time I see a movie I don't notice that stuff and then later on I do.

I still would have liked to see how Mandiloquence handled the situation though. :)

Yea but all the Star Wars movies are filled with glaring plot holes so hey at lest it's keeping true to the source material.

Oh shnahp! Those three are in trouble...

On the subject of The Force Awakens, I really enjoyed the movie. I don't give a darn about the plotholes. However, I DO give a darn that people are calling Ray a Mary Sue. NOPE.

Totally agree. Scoundrels never settle down for long. It's against their nature. I never read much from the old EU novels, so I'm not familiar the white picket fence, 2 dogs, 2 kids and a mortgage version of Solo. This version fits him better.

Not sure why, but for some reason I unconditionally hate Snoke, and the entire First Order. The one thing that would make it better though would be Grand Admiral Thrawn (who is a total BEAST).
But yeah, my main gripe with Snoke is that he's a superpowered Darksider that has never been referenced before, and doesn't really fit in with what we know of the Sith.
Well, as long as none of the stuff that happens before New Hope is changed, I don't really mind what happens.

Also, Salih and the others are about to get very very cold and wet.

To be fair we don't know anything about the Sith or how Snoke fits into the lore because everything we did know is being rewritten.

I will agree that Thrawn was awesome and I'm sad he is not canon any more, same goes for Mara Jade as well.

We didn't know much about the Sith or Vader or Palpy when they were introduced, either. In fact, Palpy was the same as Snoke when we were first introduced to him in 5; a super powered Dark Sider that didn't fit in with what we knew of the Sith at the time.

Everything I attempt to play on a piano turns into absolute hell.

I've never tired to play that song solo but I have played it in one of the concert bands I was apart of in college.
