Me in front of Abu Simbel. This has been one crazy awesome trip! Thank you all for putting up with my vacation photo filler and all your comments. Normal comics will resume next week, I'll see you all then. :)

Now I feel old; I saw the picture and remembered reading -- the month it was published -- the article in National Geographic about the Egyptians disassembling the whole site and reassembling it in an artificial hill where it would be above the water level when the Aswan High Dam was completed.

Thank you for sharing! I recognized some of these from watching The Mummy 2. :D

Fun fact - this isn't the original place of the Abu Simbel temple. The original place lies under what is now the Aswan reservoir. When the Aswan dam was constructed, the whole temple was cut into numbered stones and was moved, stone-by-stone, to this new place (which is an artificially built hill), so that it remains accessible to the public.

Your photos remind of a trip I made there 40 years ago... Gise (where the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids are), Abu Simbel... Make sure you also visit Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, where the Tutankhamen's grave is. The Aswan dam itself is pretty impressive. My father was a construction engineer; he build a smelting plant near Aswan; when I visited him we traveled to all these places. It was amazing.
